CONCEPT:
Nearly every culture across the world has its own version of the Tree of Life. Here, I imagine one specific to Louisiana, featuring a hybrid flowering tree in which multiple Louisiana-native plants grow, intertwined, in harmony. This Louisiana Tree of Life includes American Beautyberry, Habenaria quinqueseta, Black Eyed Susan, Carolina Jessamine, Louisiana Iris, primrose, and Spigelia marilandica.
The palette in this painting was inspired by a trip to Morocco in January 2023. The hyper-saturated, deep jewel tones of the decorative arts I observed there left a lasting impression.
Protection and guardianship appear frequently in my paintings. Much like a talisman you wear around your neck, I like the idea that a painting can be a protective object for your wall, can act as guardian of your space. This Louisiana Tree of Life not only serves as protection for the plants represented, but also acts as a guardian over your space, especially the plants growing in your vicinity.
As our precious Louisiana ecosystem continues to be threatened by climate change, these pieces honor - and remind us to actively protect - our natural world.
